Wildlife in Kafue National Park

Kafue National Park is one of Africa’s great wilderness areas. Covering more than 22,000 square kilometres, it is Zambia’s largest national park and one of the most diverse wildlife destinations in Southern Africa.

From lion, leopard and wild dog to elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, sable, roan and hundreds of bird species, Kafue offers a safari experience that is wild, varied and refreshingly uncrowded.

McBrides Camp is set on the banks of the Kafue River, close to the confluence of the Kafue and Mushangashe Rivers. The Big Cats and Predators of Kafue

Kafue National Park is known for its predators. Lions are regularly encountered in the wider McBrides area and are often seen resting in the shade during the heat of the day before becoming active in the early morning and late afternoon.

Leopards are present throughout the park and are most often associated with river systems, woodland edges and quieter areas where cover is available. They remain elusive, but sightings in Kafue can be exceptionally rewarding.

Spotted hyenas are commonly heard at night, while African wild dogs are occasionally seen moving through the park. A wild dog sighting is always special, as these endangered predators are among the most exciting animals to encounter on safari.

Elephants, Buffalo and Antelope

Elephants move through Kafue National Park and are often seen along riverbanks, in woodland areas and sometimes close to camp. Watching elephants drink, feed or cross through the bush is one of the great pleasures of a Kafue safari.

African buffalo are also present and can gather in impressive herds. Their movements vary with the season and availability of water, but they remain one of the park’s most important large herbivores.

Kafue is especially rich in antelope species. Guests may see puku, impala, kudu, bushbuck, waterbuck, hartebeest, sable and roan. The opportunity to see both sable and roan antelope is one of Kafue’s special wildlife attractions.

Wildlife Along the Kafue River

The Kafue River is the lifeblood of this part of the park. Hippos spend their days in the water, crocodiles bask along the banks, and elephants, buffalo, antelope and birds are drawn to the river throughout the year.

Boat safaris offer a very different perspective from a game drive. From the water, guests can quietly observe riverine wildlife, watch birds along the banks and enjoy the changing light of the Kafue River at sunrise or sunset.

Birdlife in Kafue National Park

Kafue National Park is outstanding for birding, with more than 500 recorded bird species across its riverine, woodland, wetland and grassland habitats.

The river systems around McBrides Camp are especially rewarding. Birding highlights may include African Finfoot, Pel’s Fishing Owl, African Fish Eagle, Giant Kingfisher, bee-eaters, kingfishers, herons, raptors and many woodland species.

For many guests, birding is not a separate activity at McBrides — it is part of daily life in camp. Birds are seen from the chalets, from the river, on game drives and during quiet moments between activities.

More Than Wildlife
