Wildlife in Kafue National Park
Kafue National Park is one of Africa's greatest wildlife destinations. Covering more than 22,000 square kilometres of pristine wilderness, it is Zambia's largest national park and home to an astonishing diversity of wildlife. From lions and leopards to vast herds of buffalo, elephants and some of Africa's rarest antelope species, Kafue offers an authentic safari experience where wildlife thrives in its natural environment.
Situated at the confluence of the Kafue and Mushangashe Rivers, McBrides Camp provides access to some of the park's most productive wildlife viewing areas. Guests enjoy exceptional game viewing both on land and from the water, often encountering wildlife without the crowds found in more heavily visited safari destinations.
The Big Cats of Kafue National Park
Kafue National Park is renowned for its healthy populations of predators. Lions are regularly encountered around McBrides Camp, often seen resting in the shade during the heat of the day before becoming active in the early morning and late afternoon. The park is also one of Zambia's finest destinations for leopard sightings, with these elusive cats frequently observed along river systems and woodland edges.
Spotted hyenas play an important role within the ecosystem and are commonly heard calling through the night around camp. Wild dogs, one of Africa's most endangered predators, are occasionally seen hunting across the plains and woodland habitats surrounding the park, providing some of the most exciting wildlife encounters imaginable.
Elephants, Buffalo and Plains Game
Large herds of elephants move throughout Kafue National Park, often visiting the riverbanks around McBrides Camp to drink and bathe. African buffalo are frequently encountered on game drives, sometimes gathering in impressive herds that number in the hundreds.
The park also supports an incredible variety of antelope species including puku, impala, kudu, bushbuck, waterbuck, sable antelope and roan antelope. Kafue is one of the best places in Africa to observe both sable and roan, two of the continent's most striking antelope species.
Wildlife Along the Kafue River
The Kafue River is the lifeblood of the park and attracts wildlife throughout the year. Hippos spend their days submerged in the water while Nile crocodiles bask on the riverbanks. Boat safaris provide a unique perspective of the park, allowing guests to quietly approach wildlife along the shoreline and observe species that may be difficult to view from a vehicle.
Sunset river cruises are particularly rewarding, with elephants crossing the river, buffalo gathering at the water's edge and countless bird species returning to their roosts as the day draws to a close.
Birdlife in Kafue National Park
Kafue National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers, with more than 500 recorded bird species. The diverse habitats found throughout the park support everything from kingfishers, bee-eaters and herons to fish eagles, vultures and owls.
The river systems around McBrides Camp provide particularly rewarding birding opportunities, with many guests enjoying exceptional sightings directly from camp, on boat safaris or during guided walking safaris.
