By Road

In the dry season 4WD is not essential, but a rugged high clearance vehicle is. In the wet season, 4WD is essential.

From Lusaka, take the Mongu Road for 150 kilometres. Turn right into the Mumbwa Road. 

(There now is a sign clearly indicating Mumbwa)


N.B. last fuel is in Mumbwa. From Mumbwa to McBrides’ camp and back it is approximately 220kms.

Set your Odometer in Mumbwa.


Once in Mumbwa turn left at the first circle on entering the town 

(Mumbwa Filling Station: 

S 014 deg 59.457 min, 

E 027 deg 03.617 min)

 

Turn right after about 1.1 km into the Kasempa road.  

 

At 33.2 kms take the left fork.

7.1 kms to Chitunda Open Air Reform School (keep right)

 

22.0 kms to Kabalushi Gate 

(S 014 deg 40.727 min, 

E 026 deg 39.338 min)

 

19.7 kms to Hippo Mine Turn-off - Sign posted "McBrides Camp" (S 014 deg 37.866 min,
E 026 deg 29.659 min)
 

DRY SEASON SCENIC ROUTE:  (suitable also for high-clearance 2x4's.)

 

When you get to the first yellow sign, 'McBrides' Camp' (S 014 deg. 37.866 min., E 026 deg., 29.659 min), do not turn right to the pontoon.

Go straight for 5.1 kms

Turn left where you see the second 'McBrides' Camp' sign.

The camp is 14.5 kms from this point

Go south/down through the Miombo (tall trees) until you come out on the Mushingashi stream plain, a distance of approx. 4.7 kms.

Set your odometer at 0.0 kms

At 2.1 kms take the turn to the right indicated by the arrow.

At 2.9 kms take a left turn as indicated by the sign

At 7.2 kms take a left turn as indicated by the sign

At 7.8 kms bear left, unmarked but obvious, Camp is at 9.5kms.

WET SEASON ROUTE: From the first yellow sign, go straight, passing the second yellow sign at 5.1 Kms.
10.6 kms from the turn of at the first sign to Hippo Mine. Turn left at the boom gate to avoid the mine (S 014 deg 38.968 min,
E 026 deg 24.436 min)

 

3.0 kms to Airfield. Take the road leading to the east end of the airstrip (the east is where you first hit the airstrip) and there is a signpost saying “McBrides’ Camp”.

1.2 kms to "little junction to Chris' road" (go straight) 

 

2.1 kms to McBrides

(S 014 deg 41.542 min, 

E 026 deg 23.110 min)

Travelling time is about 5 hours from Lusaka in the dry season, 6+ in the wet season.
