By Road

The road to our camp has been greatly improved, and a 4X4 is no longer necessary in the dry season, when a high clearance 2X4 will be sufficient.

From Lusaka, take the Mongu Road for 150 kilometres. Turn right into the Mumbwa Road.
N.B. last fuel is in Mumbwa. From Mumbwa to McBrides’ camp and back it is approximately 220kms.

Set your Odometer in Mumbwa.

Once in Mumbwa turn left at the first circle on entering the town 

(Mumbwa Filling Station: 

S 014 deg 59.457 min, 

E 027 deg 03.617 min)

Turn right after about 1.1 km into the Kasempa road.  

At 33.2 kms take the left fork. 

(S 014 deg 45.599 min, 

E 026 deg 54.376 min) 

7.1 kms to Chitunda Open Air Reform School (keep right)

There is a new ZAWA boom gate before Kabulushi gate

22.0 kms to the disused Kabalushi Gate

19.7 kms to Hippo Mine Turn-off - Sign posted ‘McBrides’ Camp’ (S 014 deg 37.866 min,
E 026 deg 29.659 min)
 

DRY SEASON SCENIC ROUTE - MAY TO DECEMBER:  (suitable also for high-clearance 2x4's.)

When you get to the first yellow sign, 'McBrides' Camp', go straight (S 014 deg. 37.866 min., E 026 deg., 29.659 min), do not turn right to the pontoon.

Go straight for 5.1 kms

Turn left where you see the second 'McBrides' Camp' sign.

The camp is 14.2 kms from this point

BASICALLY, FROM HERE ON, FOLLOW THE YELLOW ARROWS AND YOU WILL REACH THE CAMP

Set your odometer at 0.0 kms

At 13.5 kms bear left, unmarked but obvious, Camp is at 14.2kms.

WET SEASON ROUTE - DECEMBER TO END MAY — Please enquire as to road conditions....

From the first yellow McBrides Camp sign on the main road, go straight.

At 10.6 kms from the sign, turn left at the disused mine boom gate (follow the sign for 'McBrides' Camp (S014 deg 39.174 min & E026 deg 25.015 min)

Turn left after 1.4 kms, signposted at S014 deg 39.612 min & E026 deg, 24.560 min.

Drive on for 3.5 kms, and park you vehicle under the large shady tree (Kuduberry) at S014.41 Deg. 0.072 Min & E026 Deg. 23.852 Min.

We will meet you there and portage your luggage to camp. It is a lovely walk of about 2 Kms.

LATEST (16 Apr 2012)... You can now drive your car from this point to the camp.

Please advise us of your ETA prior to departure.

 With the improved highway, travelling time is about 5-6.5 hours from Lusaka in the dry season, and 6+ in the wet season.

The road from Mumbwa has deteriorated for the first 30 kms, so needs careful driving.
