By Road The road
to our camp has been greatly improved, and a 4X4 is no longer necessary in
the dry season. Set your Odometer in Mumbwa.
(Mumbwa Filling Station: S 014 deg 59.457 min, E 027 deg 03.617 min)
Turn right after about 1.1 km into the Kasempa road.
At 33.2 kms take the left fork. (S 014 deg 45.599 min, E 026 deg 54.376 min)

Hippo Mine Turn-off - Sign posted ‘McBrides’ Camp’ (S 014 deg 37.866 min,
DRY SEASON SCENIC ROUTE - MAY TO DECEMBER: (suitable also for high-clearance 2x4's.)
When you get to the first yellow sign, 'McBrides' Camp', go straight (S 014 deg. 37.866 min., E 026 deg., 29.659 min), do not turn right to the pontoon. Go straight for 5.1 kms Turn left where you see the second 'McBrides' Camp' sign. The camp is 14.2 kms from this point BASICALLY, FROM HERE ON, FOLLOW THE YELLOW ARROWS AND YOU WILL REACH THE CAMP Set your odometer at 0.0 kms Go south/down through the Miombo (tall trees) until you come out on the Mushingashi stream plain, a distance of approx. 4.7 kms. At 7.6 kms take a left turn as indicated by the yellow arrow and sign You will come later to a fork in the road, bear left at the yellow arrow and sign. If you miss this, you will still join the main road. At 11.9 kms take a left turn as indicated by the yellow arrow and sign At 13.5 kms bear left, unmarked but obvious, Camp is at 14.2kms. WET SEASON ROUTE:
From the first
yellow sign, go straight, passing the second yellow sign at 5.1 Kms.
3.0 kms to Airfield. Take the road leading to the east end of the airstrip (the east is where you first hit the airstrip) and there is a signpost saying McBrides’ Camp. (S 014 deg 40.205 min, E 026 deg 23.432 min)
1.2 kms - go straight)
2.1 kms to McBrides (S 014 deg 41.542 min, E 026 deg 23.110 min) With the improved highway, travelling time is about 4 hours from Lusaka in the dry season, and 6+ in the wet season. Note : GPS Co-ordinates are in hddd-mm.mmm format and with WGS 84 map datum. |
